Why Is Home Glass Different From Automotive Glass?

There are many different types of glass such as plate, mirrored, tempered and laminated.  Plate glass is used in the doors and windows of homes and other buildings.  Plate glass when broken can break into sharp dangerous shards.  This can happen when the glass plate is struck, bent or stressed. However, houses rarely move, so the risk of breakage is minimal. Because of this fact, the advantage and aesthetics of using large expanses of clear glass outweigh the risk of breakage.

In your automobile the risk of a broken window or windshield is much greater, especially in the case of an accident. When the automobile is in motion there is a much greater possibility the broken glass will strike the driver or a passenger.  This is why passenger automobile windows are constructed using tempered glass.  Tempered glass has been heat treated in such a way that the structure of the glass is changed, so when broken, it shatters into tiny little cubes.  These smaller pieces are less likely to slice or cut the automobile’s occupants.

The front windshield of an automobile has a totally different type glass.  It is called laminated glass, which are two sheets of glass with a film of plastic in between them.  This is one of the safest types of glass to use when there is a possibility of flying objects such as rocks or other road debris hitting it. The laminated glass is much less likely to shatter or break into pieces because the plastic inner liner holds the glass together.  When struck with an object such as a rock, the laminated glass may break, but the damage will be confined in a much smaller area. If the windshield is attended to soon after damage, it can often be repaired without having to replace the entire windshield.  Even a small break can expand, so if you do get one, do not hesitate to contact a professional for an auto glass repair quote.  The sooner you get it fixed, the less damage there will be to fix.

Do You Really Need To Replace A Cracked Windshield

You may have found yourself traveling down the road behind a large truck or SUV that suddenly hits a rock and BAM…right into your windshield. Now you have an annoying crack that is not going away and could be in your line of sight. Should you have it fixed right away or can it wait? What happens if you do wait?

First, small cracks can normally be easily fixed by a reputable glass company. With the technology a well-equipped glass company can provide a more structurally sound windshield once fixed. Most insurance companies will completely pay the repair cost with no deductible. The repair can be completed quickly at your home or other location. The biggest problem with waiting to have a crack repaired is the fact that the crack will grow since the windshield heats during the day and then cools at night. This action causes the crack to grow from the expansion of the glass.

Waiting to have a crack fixed could cause the windshield to have to be replaced, which will be much more costly. If the crack becomes too large, your car may fail inspection since the crack could impede the driver’s vision. There is also the possibility of the windshield being hit again enlarging the original crack.  If you do have a cracked windshield then it is safer and less expensive to have it fixed immediately. Get a free estimate to have your cracked windshield repaired professionally.

New PGW Manufacturing Plant to Open in Elkin, NC

We were pleased to hear the news that Pittsburgh Glass Works, formerly PPG’s glass division, has announced plans to open a new glass manufacturing plant in Elkin, NC.  Not just because top quality OEM and aftermarket glass will be manufactured so close to home, but because Elkin has received from PGW the most welcome affirmation that a town full of hardworking people can hope for in this economy – jobs.

PGW has promised to provide 260 jobs once the Elkin plant is fully operational in 2014, and at an average wage 17% higher than the current Surry County average.  The glass producer also agreed to invest $85 million in machinery, equipment and personal property at the new NC plant.   All of this comes with heavy local incentives for the glass manufacturing company, including a $1-per -year lease on the the county owned building.

Brett Willis covered Governor Bev Perdue’s visit to the new facility for the Mt Airy News and describes PGW’s reasons for chosing this region for it’s new operations:

In her announcement, (NC Gov.) Perdue said that PGW was initially attracted to Surry County because of its existing high-skilled workforce, quality of life and well-maintained infrastructure.

Pittsburgh Glass Works Chairman and Chief Executive Officer James D. Wiggins said that his company chose Elkin as the location of its new branch after considering 88 properties in four states.

PPG  (later PGW), has been known as provider of top quality glass products since it’s founding in the late 19th century – and has producing automobile glass since the beginning of automobiles.  As a PGW Prostar glass installer, Deals Glass Services couldn’t be more proud to see this longstanding maker of premium glass products expand their workforce in the lovely state of North Carolina!

Design Your Home Bigger and Brighter

When homeowners are looking to update the look of their home without updating the structure they usually start with paint, flooring and window coverings.  But one easy trick to achieving the more contemporary bright and open look is with wall mirrors.  This may sound like an oxymoron to those who imagine the ’80s fashion peak of mirrored walls, many of which are still in existence in homes around the country.

But like so many fashion trends that mutate and return, mirrored walls are shedding a new light on interior home design, literally.   While changes to the color and furnishings in the room may lighten the feel, there are only two methods to creating more natural light – cutting a hole in your house for a new window, or adding a mirror to reflect the existing natural light.  While it’s obvious which is the less expensive of the two, many people still have a hard time getting past the stigma of outdated home designs to see the benefits of wall mirrors.

But we looked around and found a few examples of new and classic decor ideas:

While these photos aren’t our own work, they show some of the diverse designs and modern ideas for using mirrors as part of your home design.  And we found an interior design blogger who shared some more photos of wall mirrors that really demonstrate how they can brighten and beautify your home.

No matter what the size or shape, we can help you create a custom mirror that fits your own design specifications.  So bring your creative mirror ideas to Deals Glass Service – and we can help make them come to life!

5 Essentials of Proper Windshield Replacement

Auto Glass Repair and Replacement have finally gotten some attention from the news media – unfortunately it’s for all the wrong reasons.  With some disreputable service people resorting to outrageous tactics to get business, consumers now have to take a closer look at who is doing the work and how they are doing it.  We have simplified the critical points that consumers should consider before making a decision:

1.) Proper Analysis.  Is the company registered with AGRSS® Safety Standards Council?  Are they backed by PGW’s Prostar Certification? The PGW Prostars LogoAGRSS Patchkey to proper analysis is having it done by the right people.  Seeing these logos will let you know that you are in the right place consulting with a qualified auto glass replacement provider.

2.)  Qualified Technician. The simplest way to tell if a technician is NGA Logoproperly trained and experienced is to ask if they are NGA certified  or look for the NGA Patch on their uniform.  The National Glass Association hold each technician to high performance and customer service standards.

3.) The Best Auto Glass. Usually the safest and most stable windshield for your automobile is the one installed by the manufacturer, but once there is extensive damage that is no longer true.  In this case the best option is OEM Glass, or glass made by the Original Equipment Manufacturer.   OEM Glass was created with the same type of machines and instruments as the glass that was installed by the car maker, ensuring the best fit and form for each car.

4.)  Top Quality Adhesives.  Since the adhesives are all but invisible to the consumer, this product can seem to pale in comparison to the quality of the glass.  But in the case of a collision, adhesives are what holds the windshield in place to provide a barrier between you and the cold, hard world.   And the moment of impact is a terrible time to find out that you have inferior adhesive on your glass.  You can rest assured that as a general rule – Good, reputable shops use high quality adhesives.

5.) Safe Drive Away Time.  While this may seem like an unnecessary inconvenience, we all know that accidents can happen anytime, anywhere.  That also means it’s not unheard of for a car to be involved in an accident while pulling out of the auto glass shop.  Even the best adhesives wouldn’t hold up to collision safety standards without properly curing. The bottom line is: it’s for your own good.   If a shop is not insisting on allowing time for the windshield to cure, then you know that safety is not their top priority.

Keep these things in mind the next time you need a windshield replacement, to help keep you and your automobile safe from crooked repairmen.

“Windshield Bullies” Take Advantage of Insurance Laws

This situation is happening more and more in states like South Carolina, which offer full coverage of windshield replacement for those with comprehensive insurance:  An innocent driver is at home, minding their own business, when the doorbell rings.  A seemingly qualified windshield technician informs them there is damage to their windshield (damage that may or may not have been there when they parked it).  No worries, though!  This technician can repair it for you, free of charge!  You don’t even need to worry about the paperwork…

But remember, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably isn’t true – a saying that often applies to these situations.  These bold auto glass sales tactics vary from approaching drivers at car washes and gas stations, to aggressive telemarketing to actually damaging windshields, then approaching owners at home or work about replacement.  Their work practices also range from the completely above board to down and dirty – some lie to insurance companies about everything from the quality of glass to the location where the repair was done.  (They have even been known to spam perfectly good auto glass blogs!)

The worst of the worst work in teams: one repairman does the work, then another comes by and approaches the same driver, stating that the work is of inferior quality and needs to be re-replaced.   When these charlatans convince drivers to sign off on this work they are securing one’s complicity in defrauding their own insurance company.  And usually the car owners still find themselves with cheap glass and bad installation – and maybe slightly higher insurance premiums.

So drivers beware!  If you weren’t seeking out a service for you car, don’t trust a stranger who approaches you to tell you what they can do for your automobile.  An auto glass replacement company with a good reputation doesn’t need to be aggressive to make it in this business!

Beware of Deer This Time Of Year

As one of the largest auto glass replacement companies in the area, we see far more than our fair share of deer related auto glass damage.  And rarely does a car strike a deer that there isn’t at least one piece of glass that needs replaced – whether it be the windshield or side windows, we’ve even replaced rear windows due to deer damage.   We want people to take special caution now, as during autumn and spring, when deer are most active, the numbers of accidents is significantly higher than the rest of the year.

This is also the time of year that State Farm releases it’s annual report on deer-vehicle collisions.  While our service area states, North Carolina and South Carolina, have stayed out of the top ten since 2006, we are still well above the national average risk level.  Statistics given by State Farm indicate that the likelihood of hitting a deer is about 1 in 150 for North Carolina and only slightly less in South Carolina at 1 in 153.

But the more shocking statistic places North Carolina near the top of the list in states with an increase in deer on vehicle collisions – a 33% increase over 5 years.  While much of this is due to populating previously forested area, it also might indicate that drivers aren’t as aware of the risks of those rural roads.  The insurance company offered a few tips that we would like to share – this advice could save your windshield or your life:

  • Be aware of posted deer crossing signs.  These are placed in active deer crossing areas.
  • Remember that deer are most active between 6 and 9 p.m.
  • Use high beam headlamps as much as possible at night to illuminate the areas from which deer will enter roadways.
  • Keep in mind that deer generally travel in herds – if you see one, there is a strong possibility others are nearby.
  • Do not rely on car-mounted deer whistles.
  • If a deer collision seems inevitable, attempting to swerve out of the way could cause you to lose control of your vehicle or place you in the path of an oncoming vehicle.

We want to encourage all of our readers everywhere to be watchful for deer in the roadways and pay attention to marked signs and speed limits.   With a car on deer accident occurring every 26 seconds in this country, we have to learn to be more aware – the deer never will!

Residential Window Repair Can Eliminate Fog – Procrastinators Excluded

With seasons shifting, more people are seeing the effects of seal failure in their residential windows – a permanent fog that develops inside the glass pane.  Many people ignore the problem, attributing the mist to weather and changing temperatures, or assuming they will have to replace the whole window unit.

Unfortunately, waiting is the worst thing you could do.  When the fog is just water, it can be easily removed and the window repaired.  But once that moisture begins to stain the the interior layers of the glass, your options are limited.  Moisture damage is a tricky issue anywhere in the home, and as with other moisture problems, window damage must be handled immediately.  If you wouldn’t let water stand on your family room floor for months, why tolerate it in your windows?

The Value of a Certified Technician

When you are in need of a new windshield, there is one part of the replacement process that can make or break the safety and stability of your new auto glass – the technician.   And the one sure fire way to tell if a technician is really qualified is an NGA certification.  This lets the customer know that the auto glass technician has been tested on their knowledge in both installation and repair by a party other than the glass company where they are employed.
